En los nueve capítulos que comprende este volumen sobre el naturalismo en España se exponen desde el presente siglo diversos acercamientos críticos de una corriente literaria que floreció hace alrededor de 130 años. La manera de percibir el mundo y la sociedad desde un aquí y un ahora distante del momento del florecimiento naturalista nos brinda una perspectiva diacrónica de esta tendencia que causó revuelo en sus años de surgimiento. El naturalismo es un intento de reproducir la realidad de acuerdo a una interpretación de la naturaleza basada en principios que no se pueden alterar porque están fundamentados en una metodología científica. Iniciando con La desheredada de Benito Pérez Galdós, así como también Insolación y La tribuna de Emilia Pardo Bazán, quedan bien representados dos de los primeros en adoptar los postulados naturalistas a su producción literaria. Con La Regenta y Sin rumbo se presenta un acercamiento de estas novelas naturalistas con los postulados de Schopenhauer. Además la inclusión en este volumen de grandes obras de Vicente Blasco Ibáñez como La barraca y Cañas y barro no podía pasar desapercibida por su relevancia con el tema del naturalismo donde las leyes de la naturaleza se cumplen inexorablemente. Y para concluir, un análisis de Noche de Alejandro Sawa y Carne importada de Eduardo López Bago, cierran este volumen mostrando el naturalismo radical, tendencia característica de estos dos últimos novelistas.
