The paper towel puts pressure on the disc so it don't rattle off the keepers & prevents the disc from spinning. if you've ever seen a disc with a bunch of fine scratches around the center, it was a "rattler", if you've ever seen a disc with scratches in a perfect arc, it was a "spinner", a pennies worth of paper towel prevents this.
