Seiji Ozawa will mark his twenty-fifth anniversary with the Boston Symphony during the 1998-99 season, making him the longest-tenured music director in the distinguished orchestra's 117-year history. This collection of striking photographs and personal tributes celebrates the charisma and career of a remarkable musician. Lincoln Russell captures the experience of watching Ozawa at work, which John Williams has called "beyond fathoming; he has the best hands and body for conducting in this business". The photographs feature many of the artists who have appeared with Ozawa, from Mstislav Rostropovich to Jessye Norman, but they perhaps best capture the man himself, who reveals great intensity on and off the stage. An introduction by a renowned music critic and essays by Andre Previn, Yo-Yo Ma, and others bring this unique portrait to life.Born in Shenyang, China, in 1935, Seiji Ozawa began his association with the Boston Symphony Orchestra at the Tanglewood Music Center in 1960. He held music directorships at the Chicago Symphony's Ravinia Festival, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, and the San Francisco Symphony before being appointed music director of the Boston Symphony in 1973 at the age of thirty-eight. Under his leadership he has built upon the BSO's worldwide reputation and strengthened its commitment to new music.
