The fifth mash-up mix album by the Cut Up Boys on the Ministry of Sound label in five years, Mash Up Mix 2009 is a double-disc release that mashes together fragments of a whopping 121 songs. The Cut Up Boys are the United Kingdom's best-known mash-up crew for good reason. As they've proven year after year, they have an uncanny knack for knowing which tracks go together well. The results are often remarkable, as they select generally well-known material and mash it up in surprising ways. While there is some contemporary material found on Mash Up Mix 2009, this particular volume in heavy on classics, many of which come from the '90s. The first disc is generally oriented toward hip-hop and house, including material by Dr. Dre ("Nuthin' But a G Thang"), Groove Armada ("I See You Baby"), Freemasons ("Love on My Mind"), and Mylo ("Drop the Pressure"). In contrast, the second disc is more oriented toward contemporary hits and trance, including material by Dizzee Rascal ("Bonkers"), Kid Cudi ("Day 'n' Nite"), the Prodigy ("Omen"), and Underworld ("Born Slippy"). Fans of the Cut Up Boys are sure to enjoy this fifth release of theirs in the Mash Up Mix series. Anyone with a fondness for mash-up mixes in general is likely to enjoy this album as well, though it helps to have a familiarity with the U.K. music scene.
