Reviews
"Finally, the true sequel to Jim Bouton's great Ball Four, written by my favorite pitcher's favorite catcher. I loved her book and recommend it only to people who treasure baseball, romance, building a home and a blended family, the bittersweet pleasures of caregiving, and love itself." --ROBERT LIPSYTE, Former sports journalist for the New York Times "It's a baseball story. It's an American story. It's a love story. It is Bull Durham, Huckleberry Finn and the embracing romance in Doctor Zhivago wrapped into Paula Kurman's autobiographical tale of her moving life and times with the late pitcher-writer-lover-husband Jim Bouton. The Cool of the Evening is told with passion and compassion." --IRA BERKOW, Pulitzer Prize winner and former New York Times sports columnist "We baseball fans of a certain vintage already knew quite a bit about Jim Bouton. Twenty game winner who pitched brilliantly in the World Series for iconic Yankee teams of the sixties, and then wrote an iconic book, Ball Four. That much we knew. Turns out, there was a lot more. Just as Jim, unique as he was, valued being part of a team, The Cool of the Evening is about a partnership. A marriage. A love story. A textured and at times touching story, about equals who together became something deeper and greater than the sum of their parts." --BOB COSTAS, Hall of Fame Broadcaster "The Jim Bouton you didn't know--the shy, romantic dreamer in his post-baseball years. Except that there were never any post-baseball years because he was forever gripped by the game, and like Crash Davis, he loved the game more than it loved him back. The Cool of the Evening is a moving, personal memoir of life with Jim, by his widow, Paula Kurman." --RON SHELTON, Film director and screenwriter "Just as Ball Four transcended baseball, so does The Cool of the Evening , a love story whose leading man just happened to be a World Series star. That may as well have happened in another lifetime for Jim Bouton, who gained fame with his timeless memoir and an even greater gift in Paula Kurman, who shines with this lively, loving portrait of their 40-year romance. Theirs is a story of the triumphs, tears and tenderness of growing old together--a must-read for anyone yearning to feel a deeper, more meaningful connection to a soulmate who makes them feel safe at home." --TYLER KEPNER, Sports columnist for the New York Times

Synopsis
Paula Kurman shares her forty-year love story with baseball legend Jim Bouton in her heartfelt memoir, The Cool of the Evening . "I am among the most fortunate of women. I loved Jim Bouton and was well and truly loved by him for more than four decades. It doesn't get any better than that." They met on October 15, 1977, at Bloomingdale's department store in Hackensack, New Jersey. Jim Bouton, Major League pitcher, twenty-one game winner for the New York Yankees, and author of the iconic exposé Ball Four , and Dr. Paula Kurman, professor of interpersonal communication at Hunter College. It was love at first sight. Paula knew absolutely nothing about baseball when they met, or any other sport for that matter. And Jim had never heard of interpersonal communication, but he thought reading nonverbal behavior was creepy. Yet despite their obvious differences, Paula and Jim were soulmates. Together they created a partnership of equals that was greater than the sum of their parts. It lasted forty-two years. Laced through with humor, passion, and intelligence, Paula shares the intimacy and adventures of their married life through the blending of families, moving from suburban New Jersey to rural Massachusetts, where they built a home on top of a hill deep in the wilderness of the Berkshires, the shattering blow of the death of a daughter, the healing of stonework and ballroom dancing--and finally, the devastating long-term illness that took Jim's life in the summer of 2019. Through it all, to the very end, Paula and Jim's passionate love for each other grew and deepened. The Cool of the Evening is a celebration of their remarkable relationship.

Regardless, product was exactly as described at a great price, and I have no other complaints.Seirei Gensouki: Spirit Chronicles: Omnibus 3 (Seirei Gensouki: Spirit (N° 167291017927)
