Synopsis
In 1966, Brian Wilson, hot off the success of the ground-breaking Beach Boys album Pet Sounds, embarked on a project with his new songwriting partner, Van Dyke Parks, an album he said would be 'a musical story of America'. The writing and recording process for Smile, however, devolved into chaos. The unfinished project was shelved and Wilson fell victim to his increasing bouts of depression. As Wilson now prepares finally to release Smile to the public, Dominic Priore, dubbed by MOJO 'the world's foremost Smile-ologist', has written the definitive book on the entire experience - from the original recording to the revival tour and beyond. He has been in the studio with Wilson and Parks, as well as on the road for the celebrated European Smile concerts, and the result will be - at long last - the full version of one of pop's mythic stories., Writer Priore documents every aspect Brian Wilson's collaboration with Parks to chronicle the completion of the Beach Boys' elusive "album that never was," from inception in 1967 to its release by Wilson in 2004., Every art form has its holy grail - those elusive creations around which vast legends grow. The Beach Boys' lost album Smile heads that list for rock and roll. Work on Smile began on the heels of the group's seminal Pet Sounds. Brian Wilson teamed with Van Dyke Parks to make "a musical story of America," but the writing and recording process was capsized by internal fighting and Wilson's depression. Tantalizing bits of Smile - most notably "Good Vibrations" - hit the airwaves, but the album reviled by Beach Boys singer Mike Love as evidence of "Brian's madness" was shelved until recently. Writer Domenic Priore documents every aspect of Smile from inception to its release nearly four decades later. The book features exclusive photos, forewords by composer and producer, detailed accounts of what happened in the studio, Wilson's and Parks's recent triumph with the European tour of Smile, and much more.
