Reviews
Praise for Sarah Caudwell's Outstanding Novels: The Sibyl In Her Grave "This is the last novel we will have from Sarah Caudwell; like all her marvelous books, it combines wit and forbearance, intellect and passion, above all, humor and perfection of language. Sarah set out to write a classic English village crime story, complete with vicar and mad virgin, and here it is, together with Hilary Tamar and the brilliant, sexy, young lawyers at the Chancery Bar. I hardly know whether to cry for joy at their return, or to weep for the finality of this bittersweet adventure." --Amanda Cross "The Sibyl in Her Graveis a superbly constructed novel. It is droll and wickedly funny, yet poignant. Most important, like any fine mystery, it keeps the reader guessing until the very end." --Faye Kellerman Thus Was Adonis Murdered "A tour de force...a hilarious comedy of manners." --St. Louis Post-Dispatch "A finely honed, icily witty gem of detective fiction." --Mystery News The Shortest Way To Hades "This column somehow missedThus Was Adonis Murdereda few years ago. But if it was as good as Ms. Caudwell's second book, the loss was ours.... The Shortest Way to Hadesis an utterly delightful book... it will be irresistible to all who enjoy polished, civilized prose." --The New York Times Book Review The Sirens Sang Of Murder "Oh, rapture! Hilary and the gang are back. It's been too long but it was worth the wait. The Sirens Sang of Murder is an absolute joy." --Elizabeth Peters, Praise for Sarah Caudwell's Outstanding Novels: The Sibyl In Her Grave "This is the last novel we will have from Sarah Caudwell; like all her marvelous books, it combines wit and forbearance, intellect and passion, above all, humor and perfection of language. Synopsis
Hailed by critics as a master of "the most elegant and literate comedy of manners in the mystery field today," Sarah Caudwell returns to London with her redoubtable team of young barristers--Cantrip, Selena, Ragwort, and Julia--in a mystery that crackles with her uniquely bewitching blend of wit and malice. The Sibyl in Her Grave. Julia Larwood's aunt Regina needs help. It seems that she and two friends pooled their modest resources and, on the advice of another friend, invested in equities. A short-term investment in small companies. Big risk. Big return. Now the tax man demands his due. Aunt Regina is flummoxed. They've already spent the money. How can they dig themselves out of the tax hole? But the real question is how on earth did three amateurs make a thousand-percent profit in record time, triggering a capital gains tax twice the amount of their original investment? Even more to the point: Can the sin of capital gains trigger corporeal loss? That's one for the sibyl, psychic counselor Isabella del Comino, who has offended Aunt Regina and her friends by moving into the local rectory, plowing under a cherished garden, and establishing an aviary of ravens. When Isabella is found dead, all clues seem to lead to death by fiscal misadventure. Was the sibyl compromising someone's bottom line? Or was it one for the birds? Julia calls in old friend and Oxford fellow, Professor Hilary Tamar, to follow a money trail that connects Aunt Regina and her friends to what appears to be capital fraud--and capital crime. The two women couldn't have a better champion than the erudite Hilary, as once again Sarah Caudwell sweeps us into the scene of the crime, leaving us to ponder the greatest mystery of all. Hilary, him--or her--self.

- v***v (2098)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoAlthough this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate. How to chalk talk, by Harlan Tarbell (N° 197064259889)
