When Coleman Hawkins, a colored freedman, goes bankrupt, his wife and daughter are sold back into slavery at an auction. Seeking vengence, Coleman enlists in the Union Army where he finds satisfaction for the wrongs done to his family. Colemans daughter, Clara, survives during the War by gaining hope and strength through singing a slave song.
