A popular history of Shanghai, focusing in particular on its golden age in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, this book traces the complex texture of Chinese and foreign life from Shanghai's days as a market town. Wei tells the story of gangsters, traders, and bankers, as well as the artists, political activists, missionaries, and armies of laborers who made Shanghai one of the world's foremost business cities, and the flashpoint of political and social change in China. Asia's largest city, Shanghai pulsated with wealth sophistication and suffering, through its international heyday to the communist takeover in 1949., A complex mixture of traditional Chinese and foreign influences, and often the flashpoint for political and social change, Shanghai is Asia's largest city and a key financial centre. Packed with tales of traders and gangsters, artists and activists, missionaries and armies of labourers, this concise history focuses in particular on the period from Shanghai's heyday in the late-nineteenth century to the Communist take-over of 1949.

The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate.
