Reviews
"Traumatic brain injuries are a major concern not only for those hurt in war and sports, but also in many other areas. Many of the headlines surrounding brain injuries have focused on football-related injuries, but this broad look at the topic makes clear there are many varieties that should demand attention. The person suffering could be an infant victim of shaken-baby syndrome or a soldier coping with the aftereffects of head injury from war, among other causes. Goldsmith provides basic information about the brain and the definition of TBI as well as explaining the different types of concussions. Individual chapters explore currently prominent themes, especially sports-related injuries, war wounds and damage caused by motor vehicle accidents. Even an event as common as falling down is examined. The exploration concludes with looks at coping with TBI and what might be on the horizon for research and treatment. A lot of ground is covered in this slim volume, but it is a solid introduction to the topic. It makes good use of graphics, photographs and sidebars to deliver complicated information. There is comprehensive backmatter: glossary, source notes, index, photo credits and selected bibliography, featuring only titles from the last few years. Particularly valuable is a section called 'For Further Information,' with books, organizations and websites, suicide-awareness and -prevention sources, and videos. An efficient survey of a timely topic." --Kirkus Reviews, "A concise and well-researched exploration of mild to severe injuries of the human brain. The well-organized, short chapters provide overviews of traumatic brain injuries caused by sports, motor-vehicle accidents, in the military, and more. Each chapter begins with an account of a real incident, which is then discussed and supported by statistics and scientific studies. Small, full-color photos appear throughout. While the book is hardly comprehensive, it is a strong start for research and provides an extensive bibliography and suggested readings, websites, and videos. Middle school libraries especially will be well served by this book due to the open format and accessible language, although the chapters covering sports and motor-vehicle accidents offer insightful information for high school audiences as well." --School Library Journal, "This slim, attractive volume, written by a registered nurse and health writer, presents an absorbing overview of concussions and traumatic brain injury. Illustrated with color photographs and statistical charts, the text presents personal injury stories followed by scientific and medical information that explains how brain injuries occur and their devastating effects. New tests, assessment tools, and brain research have brought this subject to the forefront to help us understand how to treat and limit the risk of brain injury in sports, among soldiers, etc. Students will benefit from this vital, timely insight. This is an excellent choice for science and current issues Common Core reading selection, research, and personal interest. Pair with Fourth Down and Inches: Concussions and Football's Make-or-Break Moment by Carla Killough McClafferty (Lerner Publishing Group, 2013)." --starred, Library Media Connection, "Traumatic brain injury is in the news on many fronts: high school sports, NFL football, and wounded warriors, to name a few. Registered nurse and health writer Goldsmith relates the new information about traumatic brain injury, offering personal stories along the way. She covers the causes of concussions in chapters relating to sports, the military, falls, and motor vehicle accidents. In addition, she examines new safeguards, including testing and research for better treatment, along with ways to prevent head injuries. Photographs, charts, and statistics are included, which expand the information. Appended are source notes, a glossary, a bibliography, and a list of websites and resources. The currency of this topic and its potential impact on teens make this a smart choice for school and public libraries." --Booklist

Synopsis
Two soccer players collide on the field. A soldier in Afghanistan is thrown to the ground during a bomb explosion. A teen has an accident while riding her bike--and she isn't wearing her helmet. Each of these incidents can produce a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Of the 1.7 million Americans officially diagnosed with TBI each year, 52,000 die from their injuries. And that doesn't count all the unreported TBIs, which experts estimate range from about two to four million more incidents. TBIs range from concussions to penetrating head injuries to life-threatening brain swelling and coma. And they have countless causes: war, sports, car and motorcycle accidents, falls, and physical violence. The aftereffects can be devastating, including compromised memory and concentration, loss of hearing, physical disabilities, depression, brain disorders, and, in the worst-case scenario, death. Find out about the different types of TBIs, what causes them, and how they are diagnosed and treated. Along the way, you'll learn about National Hockey League player Derek Boogaard and U.S. Representative Gabby Giffords, both of whom sustained TBIs, with dramatically different outcomes. You'll also meet teens and young adults living with TBIs and the doctors who treat them. And you'll learn about amazing medical technologies that help victims recover and promise hope for the future.
