Reviews
"In this revealing new study, Blume shows that a series of competing internal and external pressures helped birth Hemingway's now-legendary debut roman A clef,  The Sun Also Rises ... Blume has carved a mountain of original research into a riveting tale of Hemingway's literary, romantic, and publishing travails." - Publishers Weekly,  starred review "Blume's deeply researched "backstory" enhances the depth [of The Sun Also Rises] and restates its very real significance ... What happened between those two points in Hemingway's life, from being a nobody to very much a somebody, is reconstructed with authority and insight." - Booklist , starred review "Drawing on a rich cache of "Lost Generation" memoirs, as well as Hemingway's and his contemporaries' correspondence, the author portrays Hemingway as a ruthless egotist bent on achieving his literary ambitions, often at the expense of early supporters, including Sherwood Anderson, Gertrude Stein, and Robert McAlmon....Blume brings together in one place a wealth of information on Hemingway's first novel that will appeal to students and general readers alike." - Library Journal Journalist Blume offers a brisk rendering of a familiar Lost Generation story featuring its most colorful protagonist... Blume's reimagining of 1920s Paris and its scandalous denizens is vivid, spirited, and absorbing. - Kirkus "In this magnificently reported book, Lesley Blume deftly documents the genesis of Ernest Hemingway's genius." - Gay Talese   "With impeccable research, delicious details, illuminating insight, and chiaroscuro wit, Lesley Blume has written the best book on Hemingway in Paris since 'A Moveable Feast.'" - Charles Scribner III   "This gloriously gossipy, compulsively readable account of Hemingway's early years in Paris with his first wife, Hadley, and the rest of the "Lost Generation," is a welcome successor to Paula McLain's novel The Paris Wife . How did Hemingway turn the wild weeks of bullfighting in Pamplona and the alcohol-addled nights in Left Bank cafes into The Sun Also Rises ? That's the serious question at the heart of Blume's well-researched book." - Annalyn Swan and Mark Stevens , Pulitzer-PRIZE winning authors of DE KOONING: An American Master
Synopsis
An account of the making of Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises, the larger-than-life people that inspired it, and the vast changes it wrought on the literary world, The making of Ernest Hemingway's The Sun Also Rises , the outsize personalities who inspired it, and the vast changes it wrought on the literary world In the summer of 1925, Ernest Hemingway and a clique of raucous companions traveled to Pamplona, Spain, for the town's infamous running of the bulls. Then, over the next six weeks, he channeled that trip's maelstrom of drunken brawls, sexual rivalry, midnight betrayals, and midday hangovers into his groundbreaking novel The Sun Also Rises. This revolutionary work redefined modern literature as much as it did his peers, who would forever after be called the Lost Generation. But the full story of Hemingway's legendary rise has remained untold until now. Lesley Blume resurrects the explosive, restless landscape of 1920s Paris and Spain and reveals how Hemingway helped create his own legend. He made himself into a death-courting, bull-fighting aficionado; a hard-drinking, short-fused literary genius; and an expatriate bon vivant. Blume's vivid account reveals the inner circle of the Lost Generation as we have never seen it before, and shows how it still influences what we read and how we think about youth, sex, love, and excess.

Unfortunately I received a damaged book, the item and the package both were damaged and it was clearly evident its appearance that it happened during transit. The seller was very understanding and gave me a full refund for the damaged book, though it was no fault of their own. Other than the damage, the book was as described, the quality and condition aside from the damaged spot was like new. The cost of the book was reasonable. I would definitely purchase from the seller again.

Although this book was not as described, with no picture of it in the listing, the seller communicated well and quickly gave me a full refund while letting me keep it. The minimal packaging left the book a bit vulnerable (typical for ThriftBooks), but it did arrive safely and timely. As usual, it’s hit or miss with this seller, but often times you can get great values, and their customer service is always very good. Many other sellers with millions of transactions don’t even communicate.
