It can be attached by either the clamp or by drilling a hole in the table or desk. I chose the clamp and it seems to be holding the arms in place very well. It supports the monitors perfectly well - they don't go quite high enough to see the entire laptop screen if I put it underneath but it just clips off the frame, which is perfectly fine. I am completely happy with these arms.
