Began to make their wants known, and they not only had to be listened to, but the efforts of Great Britain were to encourage them. They were all protestants, and their work along religious lines was powerful in their own direction. Detroit was peculiarly situated. It was known to be 21 possession of the United States. But in the hands of Great Britain temporarily. The latter country desired to retain it, but knowing that they could never own it. Without at least another war, the English did not care to improve it by establishing churches or other per manent buildings. No protestant church, or church society, was ever permanently established there prior to 1796, the date of the Exodus.
