Fortunately the packaging had protected the item itself but am unsure as to why the courier didn't just post such a small item through my letterbox...

Last time, the tracking was bad so it didn’t actually arrive. When it did, it was missing pieces. The seller should refund buyers of any items not included before it ships. It’s very bad business to send incomplete. Buyers word against seller. Not cool.
