Vor dem Hintergrund des chaotischen Bürgerkriegs im Sierra Leone der 1990er-Jahre erzählt "Blood Diamond" vom Schicksal des Ex-Söldners Danny Archer (Leonardo DiCaprio) aus Simbabwe und des Mende-Fischers Solomon Vandy (Djimon Hounsou). Beide sind Afrikaner, aber ihre Herkunft und ihre Lebenssituation könnten nicht unterschiedlicher sein - bis sie durch die Umstände plötzlich eine gemeinsame Aufgabe haben: Sie wollen einen seltenen rosa Diamanten aufspüren, der ihr Leben verändern kann... oder den Tod bringt. Solomon ist von seiner Familie getrennt und zur Arbeit auf den Diamantenfeldern gezwungen worden. Als er einen außergewöhnlichen Rohdiamanten entdeckt, versteckt er ihn unter großem persönlichen Risiko: Falls sein Diebstahl bemerkt wird, hat er sein Leben sofort verwirkt. Aber Solomon weiß natürlich, dass er mit dem Diamanten nicht nur seiner Frau und den Töchtern das Flüchtlingsschicksal ersparen, sondern auch seinen Sohn Dia vor dem noch schlimmeren Los als Kindersoldat bewahren könnte.
