In this Atari 2600 port of the hit Arcade game of the same name by Sega, players are up against the robot Zaxxon, whose plans include enslaving the entire galaxy. They must traverse asteroid-based fortresses, avoid the enemy squadrons patrolling deep space, and take on the evil robot himself if they want to save mankind. This game displays the graphics at an angle to create a pseudo 3D effect. Players must fly through openings in walls and over and under force fields as they fly through each fortress. Robots and gun turrets are out to get them, and they'll crash if they run out of fuel before they can fill up at a fuel tank. After destroying as many deep space patrol ships as they can, players must then take on Zaxxon himself. The only way to kill him is to hit the missile under his arm a certain number of times; the number required increases with each of the four skill levels which can be selected. Once the robot has been destroyed the game starts over with more difficulty. Players start each game with five fighters and gain a new one for every 10,000 points they earn.
