Synopsis
Set in the industrial town of Hamilton, Ohio, the book is contained of self-contained stories, each recalling moments or periods in the author's upbringing that left an indelible imprint on his life. The Coterian Retreat is told through the eyes of a child-but from an adult perspective., On the conclusion of a sixth-grade field trip to a local amusement park... "We exited the turnstiles and climbed onto a yellow school bus that was soon crammed with sunburned classmates wearing souvenir hats and lugging piles of worthless junk. I was flat broke, and my stomach was a little queasy-and the feeling was marvelous." On entering junior high school... "Except for a blessed few, seventh-grade males were an alien race of mutant geeks. We had disproportionate bodies, awkward and gawky mannerisms, and cracking voices that were constant reminders that we were trapped in an adolescent twilight zone." On having one's own bedroom... "The room was off-limits to snooping sisters and was regularly combed for feminine paraphernalia. A brown wooden miniature bulldog with concentrated glass eyes and a green collar served as a door stop and symbolic sentry, faithfully guarding the portal to my private domain." On the first "real" kiss... "I felt as if I had been administered a jolt of electricity-my lips felt numb, and my entire body was temporarily sapped of energy. My salivary glands were operating full-throttle, and my head did a quick shudder as my eyes struggled to regain focus. The effects were short-lived but momentous, and a part of me felt like a little boy who had just ridden a roller coaster-I was dying to try it again." On being a teenager... "When adults looked at us, we could sense their envy. We now had a firm hold on the intangible youth that had slipped through their grasp, and younger children dreamed of being at our level of physical maturation and autonomy. We were the center of attention-and it was a nice place to be. Content in our innocence, time was considered a restriction rather than a blessing. It held no value and placed unnecessary limitations on our otherwise limitless lives." Book jacket.

- i***f (3)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoThis was the most safe packaging I have ever seen on eBay order for glass product delivery. She was very careful to protect every aspect of the cups I ordered. I was so amazed by the packaging done that I insisted my husband come in to see how safe the cups were. He literally said to me, “These are packed so well they could have been dropped from an airplane and they would still be OK!” THANK YOU, Jessica!!!! Best ever!!!!! Happy recipient!!!! P.S. I am not related to her or a good friend.
