Synopsis
This book explores the little-known legacy left behind by soldiers on the Western Front of the First World War - wall markings that offer a revealing insight into the thoughts and feelings of young men far from home., The soldiers of the First World War left a little-known legacy in forgotten caves along the Western Front: thousands of inscriptions and wall carvings that tell stories of courage, pride, hope and fear.Limestone quarries and bunkers along the front lines in north-eastern France, where the men sheltered, have been rediscovered by archaeologists in recent years. Thousands of British and Commonwealth soldiers pencilled their name, rank and serial number and even their home addresses onto the walls in the agonising awareness that this might be their last trace. In the relative safety of crowded tunnels, they wrote poems and displayed astonishing artistry in the portraits and sculptures they carved into the rough rock.Whispering Walls takes the reader into the gloom of these timewarp locations under the Western Front where the graffiti, in many cases as clear as if it had been written yesterday, rings out with the question: will I survive? The book tracks the fates of individual soldiers and presents some of the most striking inscriptions in over 100 photographs. Now that the last survivors have gone, the writings provide fresh insight into their mindset and are helping researchers to trace the missing, over a century after the guns fell silent., The soldiers of the First World War left a little-known legacy in forgotten caves along the Western Front: thousands of inscriptions and wall carvings that tell stories of courage, pride, hope and fear.Limestone quarries and bunkers along the front lines in north-eastern France, where the men sheltered, have been rediscovered by archaeologists in recent years. - r***r (2959)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoBook arrived today, 2 days before deadline given by the seller. Well-packaged & in good condition. Price was very competitive, & the book was accurately listed. Great communication. I appreciate the seller getting back to me when I was having trouble tracking the book's delivery progress. Apparently there were 2 different tracking numbers - one in Canada & the other in the U.S., since it was initially shipped from Canada. Thank you very much for your quick response & helpful information.Rethinking Investing: A Very Short Guide to Very Long-Term Investing by Charles (N° 396183075510)
- e***_ (13)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Ultimi 6 mesiAcquisto verificatoSeller handles a massive inventory so I give them grace on the slow processing and shipping. They were very communicative and prompt with their response when I messaged in asking about it. Book was in good condition as described. Small ding on the page edges which wasn't mentioned, but that's fairly common even at your typical book store. Still a good value and I'd buy from them again.
- 0***i (4)- Feedback lasciato dall'acquirente.Mese scorsoAcquisto verificatoThe first item arrived with some damage to the inside back cover, but the seller responded immediately, assuring me they’d provide a replacement, and even told me I could keep the original. They were upfront about a short delay, and gave a clear estimated ship date, and followed up right on time once it shipped. The replacement arrived in perfect condition and exactly as described. I really appreciated their transparency and professionalism. Would definitely buy from them again!
