Synopsis
This is the first of two volumes of essays in commemoration of Alan Turing, whose pioneering work in the theory of artificial intelligence and computer science continues to provoke wide discussion. The essays focus on three questions: What, if any, are the limits on machine "thinking"? Can a machine be genuinely intelligent? And, Might we ourselves be biological machines? Contributors include Chris Fields, Joseph Ford, Robert M. French, Anthony Galton, Robin Gandy, Clark Glymour, J. R. Lucas, Donald Michie, Peter Mott, Ajit Narayanan, Herbert A. Simon, Aaron Sloman, Ian Stewart, and Blay Whitby., This is the first of two volumes of essays on the intellectual legacy of Alan Turing, whose pioneering work in artificial intelligence and computer science made him one of the seminal thinkers of the century. A distinguished international cast of contributors focus on the three famous ideas associated with his name: the Turing test, the Turing machine, and the Church-Turing thesis. 'a fascinating series of essays on computation bycontributors in many fields' Choice, This is the first of two volumes of essays in commemoration of Alan Turing, whose pioneering work in the theory of artificial intelligence and computer science continues to be widely discussed today. A group of prominent academics from a wide range of disciplines focus on three questions famously raised by Turing: What, if any, are the limits on machine 'thinking'? Could a machine be genuinely intelligent? Might we ourselves be biological machines, whose thought consists essentially in nothing more than the interaction of neurons according to strictly determined rules? The discussion of these fascinating issues is accessible to non-specialists and stimulating for all readers. Also available in paperback is the companion volume: Connectionism, Concepts, and Folk Psychology, edited by Andy Clark and Peter Millican. While Volume 1 concentrates on Turing's main innovations in artificial intelligence, Volume 2 looks more broadly at his intellectual legacy in philosophy and cognitive science., This is the first of two volumes of essays in commemoration of Alan Turing, whose pioneering work in the theory of artificial intelligence and computer science continues to be widely discussed today. Packed well, answered immediately when I had a question, item seemed almost brand new (listed as used) which is a plus. Little down side on shipping cost but honestly it was worth it compared to a brand new one, it did however come pretty quick. Hope this helps...
