Title: Local historian Comeau adds to impressive resume with first published work Author: Jay Turner Publisher: Canton Citizen Date: 12/3/09 Between his day job as a communications officer at Suffolk University, along with the myriad other hats he wears both personally and publicly, it is a wonder that lifelong Canton resident George Comeau ever finds time in the day to sleep. In addition to serving as one of the town’s preeminent local historians, Comeau, 43, is an attorney, teacher, playwright, actor, documentary filmmaker, web designer, event planner and ardent preservationist. He also serves his beloved hometown as a historical commissioner and library trustee, and has been the chairman of the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners since his appointment by the governor in 2004. And with the recent release of his first book, a postcard history entitled Canton, Comeau, whose first foray into the world of historical research began with a Paul Revere diorama in the fifth grade, can now add published author to his growing list of accomplishments. It’s all connected; it’s absolutely all connected,” said Comeau of his numerous projects, from the diorama right down to the book, which hit shelves November 23. In both cases, as with most of his creative endeavors, Comeau combined two of his greatest passions — research and Canton history — to tell a story that was intended to be shared with others. But whereas previous works focused on a particular person, event or landmark, such as his 1987 documentary Viaduct,” this latest effort examines the town through a much wider lens, tracing the development of Canton over the past 120 years through the people who lived there and sent local postcards around the world.” This is an evolving collection of views that tell people what we valued and found worthy to photograph at a time when Canton was a sleepy suburb of Boston with a bucolic history being challenged by a new industry and evolving transportation systems,” said Comeau, according to a press release issued by the book’s publisher, South Carolina-based Arcadia Publishing. Featuring over 200 vintage postcards and never before seen” photographs from public and private collections, along with 18,000 words of accompanying captions, Canton, the author hopes, will take readers on a journey of discovery into the town’s past while also making a strong case for preserving the unique buildings and places” that are showcased throughout the book. Comeau said he chose to pursue the book idea after a chance encounter with fellow local historian David Allen Lambert, who recently completed a postcard history of Stoughton, also published by Arcadia. It all happened within the last ten months,” explained Comeau, who described the whole process as enjoyable yet time consuming. His said his favorite part was working with the images — 600 in all from a variety of sources, including his personal collection as well as those of fellow collectors Peter Sarra and Charlie Crespi. He also found several previously undeveloped glass plate negatives dating back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries in the basement of the Historical Society, and with the help of a high-resolution scanner and his own detective skills, he was able to piece together enough information to begin to tell a story. Admittedly, Comeau undertook the project with what he called a certain amount of hubris” regarding his knowledge of Canton’s past; however, pride soon turned to humility with every new postcard or photo he encountered. Very, very quickly and early on,” he said, I realized two things: one, how much I didn’t know, and two, that the discovery process today has changed dramatically.” Specifically, Comeau said he was able to find obscure and very valuabl

Synopsis
Canton is a town like so many New England towns. Its rich history extends back to Canton's early connections with the founding fathers. An expansive industrial center was made possible by superb water rights and one of the first railroads in the nation. Canton's history is enriched by its strong associations with patriots, industrialists, great thinkers, and doers. Within Canton are postcards and photographs that capture the spirit of enterprise and pride in the community.
