Languedoc.

Description: Striking and hightly detailed copper engraved 1680's De Wit chart of the southern France including the French Riviera from Saulec and Narbone to just east of the mouth of the Rhone with the cities of Avignon, Arles, Cahors, and Narbone. It is decorated with a sailing ship, compass rose, title and distance scale cartouches and a fine coat of arms. Map based on the cartographic sources by Joan Jannson.
Date: 1680 ( undated )
Dimension: Paper size approx.: cm 63,3 x 53,8
Condition: Very strong and dark impression on strong paper. Paper with chains. Contempary original colors. Wide margins. Paper browned. Conditions are as you can see in the images.   
Cartographer: Frederick de Wit, born 1630 in Amsterdam, was a famous engraver and publisher in Amsterdam. He acquired many of the printing plates of Blaeu and Janssonius when it came to auction. His map were very popular because of the quality of the engravings and the beautiful colouring. After his death in 1706, his work was re-issued by Pieter Mortier and Covens & Mortier.
